Blind Trust

Blind Trust is a participative performance project that focuses on the process of perception and examines our awareness of those senses considered “lesser”, through the direct interaction between audience and performers.

CONCEPT
Blind Trust is about involving all our senses in perceiving the space and movements around us. While vision and language are our primary means of communication, the show tries to create dialogue in the absence of those two.
Research suggests, in fact, that roughly thirty percent of our daily perceptions depend on touch, hearing and smell, while vision alone makes up for the rest. ‘Blind trust’ looks at how those thirty percent can be amplified by employing the underused senses of each individual and through the interaction with performers.

In the absence of sight, haptic contact becomes a main element in the performance, where our perceptions, still largely based on images, become a personal interpretation and at the same time an immediate response to a stimulus.

PERFORMANCE

Upon arrival, audience members are given a brief instructions paper and allotted an individual slot for entering the performance space (they will participate one at a time).
Since the performance is a personal exploration that is best experienced without previous knowledge of what will happen, no detailed description or any footage of what happens during the performance are provided. The only exception being a video projection, in the waiting room, showing past audience members share their experience and impressions, after having attended  previous sessions of the performance.

When their turn comes, a single spectator enters the performative space which they are free to explore. It all starts as a visual journey that gradually turns into and entirely proprioceptive experience, in total (un)blindness and silence. The audience is thus guided along by the performers, hence the name of the project.

WORKSHOPS

Milka has developed a series of workshops (3-6 hours) that guide participants through a range of movement and perception exercises.
By looking at and exploring relations with the others in different situations, where the gradual deprivation of some senses leaves space to amplify others more, participants of all backgrounds can experiment, individually and in group new ways of initiating movement and physical communication.

A longer 15 hours workshop is a first step in training participants to be the performers in a Blind Trust performance.
